While early members of the order spent their hours in labor, prayer and religious contemplation, today’s socially active Dominicans are more likely to be counseling the underprivileged, pasturing in rural parishes, or supervising construction of a solar greenhouse in their community’s permaculture project.

Members are encouraged to choose meaningful ministries suited to their gifts.

Sharing the Gospel continues to be a favorite ministry of many Dominicans, whether teaching Hispanic youngsters in southwest Kansas . . . or living and working among the poor in the dusty streets of a Nigerian village.

Preaching is at the heart of the Dominican vocation.  Dominican women rely on the exhilaration and power of the spoken Word to share the Good News in prayer, song and liturgy . . . and to wield its message as a weapon against suffering and oppression of the poor.

Caring and compassionate concern for the sick and the elderly bring many Dominican women to vocations in health care and related fields: holistic medicine, home health care, and chemical dependency, to name a few.

Responding to God’s command for stewardship of the earth, Dominican women  purchased an 80-acre farm west of Great Bend.  There they work to establish a permaculture setting for study and teaching natural uses of land, water, energy and human resources.

Founded by Dominic Guzman in 12th Century Europe, the Dominicans have traveled great distances in time, social attitudes and - yes - even continents to arrive where they are today.

The Great Bend, Kansas Dominican Sisters have carved their own niche in America’s heartland.

The life of a Great Bend Dominican woman today is rich with opportunities.  We invite your association with us as a sister, an associate, or a partner in mission.

We invite you to explore  three levels of association  with the Dominican Sisters of Great Bend.

Through the centuries, Dominican women have responded to God’s call in traditional and not-so-traditional ways.
